Introduction:
FIFA may have chosen Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup, but many fans and critics believe it was the incorrect decision. Some, including FIFA President Sepp Blatter, are concerned about the region's high heat, which might lead to harmful circumstances for players and fans. Others wonder if there will be enough stadiums or hotel rooms to accommodate all of the guests who will attend the games.
The corruption scandal that surrounded Qatar's winning bid:
In a 2014 report, former US attorney Michael Garcia alleged that Qatar and its state-run broadcaster
Al Jazeera paid millions to top football officials in exchange for their votes to host the world cup.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has also been accused of accepting bribes from Qatar in return for supporting their bid.
The accusations have led many people to believe that Qatar's winning bid was not based on merit, but on corruption and bribery.
However, these claims were rejected by both Qatar and Fifa.
Despite these denials, it seems as if the validity of Qatar's winning bid is questionable because of these allegations.
The poor working conditions for migrant workers in Qatar:
Qatar was selected in 2014 to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
Human rights groups slammed the move, citing Qatar's terrible treatment of migrant labour.
According to current estimates, up to a million migrant labourers will be imported into Qatar before then to finish tournament-related building projects.
Qatar's construction sector is well-known for its poor salaries, unsafe working conditions, and shoddy homes.
These problems impact Qataris as well as migrant labour. Amnesty
International reports that many
Qatari nationals have been evicted from their houses to make way for hotels and tourist attractions.
It is believed that poor living conditions have caused 400 deaths.
The lack of infrastructure in Qatar:
Qatar, with a population of approximately 2 million people, is a small country.
It is bordered by Saudi Arabia and Oman. Qatar also has territorial seas with Iran that are disputed.
The nation has 12 billion barrels of confirmed oil reserves and 25 trillion cubic metres of natural gas reserves.
The lack of infrastructure in Qatar is already visible, as stadium and hotel
development has halted because they were not designed to withstand the severe heat and humidity that
Qatar receives throughout the summer months (June-August).
What does this signify for the tourist industry? What does this signify in terms of transportation?
What does this signify for the food industry? Qatar must be able to host games, build hotels, provide security, and manage visitors.
The high cost of attending the World Cup in Qatar:
The 2022 World Cup will be staged in Qatar.
Many organisations have voiced concerns about Qatar's human rights record,
the expensive cost of attending, and Qatar's treatment of migrant workers.
FIFA's decision has been controversial for a number of reasons.
The first is that going to a game in Qatar is expensive.Game tickets run from $150 to $400, which is not cheap when you consider the average annual pay in Qatar is around $24000.
(which indicates that most people cannot afford to attend a game). Furthermore, any extras like food or souvenirs will cost you even more money, making a visit to the Qatar World Aquarium a pricey experience. The risk of heat exhaustion for players and fans during the summer
